Patrick Crandell, attorney at Collins Einhorn Farrell PC, published an article in the April edition LACHES “Everything You Wanted To Know About The Legislature (And Never Would Have Asked).” I’ve never made sausage. Let’s start there. But my time working in the Michigan Legislature taught me that process is important – almost as important as the final product. Because if you understand the process, then you know how, when, and where you can have the most impact.
As lawyers we read, analyze, research, brief, agonize over, and argue about the law almost daily. But while we may be able to tell a court what we think a statute means, we can’t explain where it came from or why it was enacted. And in our personal lives, we experience the effects of the legislative process without understanding how it works.
