Morton H. Collins
June 26, 1931-September 28, 2018
With heavy hearts, we share the sad news that Morton H. Collins, founder of Collins Einhorn Farrell, and 2016 recipient of the Oakland County Bar Association’s Distinguished Career Achievement Award passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018.
Mort graduated from Wayne State University in 1953 and Wayne State University Law School in 1958. He practiced law as part of other firms and later on his own. In 1971, he hired Brian Einhorn, and two years later Clay Farrell, and eventually the firm became Collins Einhorn Farrell. Under Mort’s leadership, the firm has grown to nearly 60 attorneys in its 47-year history.
Mort was a fierce advocate. He tried many complex professional liability and product liability cases in his five-decade career. But Mort’s clients were not the only recipients of his passion and advocacy. He was an early member of JARC, a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that aims to provide high-quality programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. Mort also served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center as well as the St. Louis Center for Boys and the Arc of Oakland County—both dedicated to helping children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Mort said of the 2016 OCBA award: “It is the pinnacle of success to be recognized by my peers.” Mort’s youngest son Dan, a partner in the firm that bears his father’s name, described his legacy: “My dad is the ultimate zealous advocate for everyone he knows, whether it’s his family, clients, or friends.” In his message to firm employees, President Mike Sullivan said “Mort was very proud of the firm that he founded, the accomplishments of all of you, and the opportunities he helped create for all of us. We are in his debt.”
Mort will be greatly missed by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Marilynn Schmier Collins. Loving partner of 13 years of Corrine Lemberg. Cherished father of Margo Collins, Andrew Collins, and Daniel (Veronica) Collins. Loving Grandpa Mort of Camrynn and Dylan Collins.
The funeral will be held at Ira Kaufman Chapel on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at 10:00 am.
